Awesome Asian Americans: An Illustrated Anthology That Inspires Young Generation To Dream Beyond Borders

A child’s social and cognitive development, well-being, and mental health can all benefit from reading. Authors Oliver Chin and Phil Amara want children and parents to discover important chapters of American history that aren’t featured in school textbooks.

“Awesome Asian Americans: 20 Stars Who Made America Amazing” is an illustrated anthology by Chin and Amara on notable Asian Americans in order to encourage children and their parents to learn about AAPIs who have made a positive impact on our society and culture. The 60 vibrant color illustrations by artist Juan Calle bring these fascinating and informative profiles to life.

The graphic novel features compelling personalities, from diverse backgrounds and professions including Mindy Kaling (comedian), Sammy Lee (Olympic gold medalist), Satya Nadella (Microsoft CEO), and Jeremy Lin (basketball player).

Despite racism, discrimination, and stereotypes, these notable pioneers persisted and became role models for future generations.

“This is the book I wish I had when I was young. Who knew that as an Asian American I could one day be a social media phenomenon, a CEO, an astronomer, a Broadway star, or an activist? Awesome Asian Americans is engaging and entertaining, but it’s not a fluffy read. The authors frame these extraordinary lives in the social contexts of their times, making their stories our story.” reviewed by Renee Tajima-Pena, Filmmaker and UCLA professor of Asian American Studies
