Stephanie Hsu is set for a guest-starring role in the Disney+ series “American Born Chinese,” which reconnects the actress with her “Everything Everywhere All at Once” co-stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan.
The 31-year-old actress is best known for her breakout performance in “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” in which she plays Joy/Jobu Tupaki, who is loaded with extraordinary powers in terms of verse-jumping experimentation.
In the Disney Plus series, the actress will now play Shiji Niangniang, the Goddess of Stones, who works with her magical dog in a modern-day jewelry business.
Based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name, American Born Chinese follows Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. Even more, worlds clash when Jin meets a new foreign student, Amelia (Sydney Taylor), on the first day of school, and Jin becomes unknowingly entangled in a fight against Chinese mythological gods. The action-packed coming-of-age adventure explores identity, culture, and family.
Michelle Yeoh will play “Guanyin,” an unassuming auntie who hides her true identity as the all-powerful Buddhist bodhisattva of Compassion, while Ke Huy Quan portrays “Freddy Wong,” a fictional character from a popular mid-1990s sitcom.
