Bhutanese Single Mother Breaks Stereotypes And Shares Passion for Her Country

Bhutan is a small country and historically a remote kingdom in south-central Asia located between China and India with a population of fewer than 800 thousand people.

While many countries are struggling to reduce their carbon emissions, the Kingdom of Bhutan is a carbon-negative country and was the first to achieve this status in the world.

Bhutanese Karma Dema has spent over 15 years working for an international organization, focusing on building Bhutan’s young nascent democracy, which is over a decade old.

The single mother of two teenage kids is also advocating gender equality issues as women continue to lag behind on many levels particularly in politics, although Bhutan is a gender-egalitarian society with a matrilineal line.

“I come from a divorce background as a child my parents got separated but wanting to cut away from the negative stigma of being raised by a single mother and now raising my own children as a single mother.” Karma shared with the AHN community.

According to Karma, childhood wasn’t easy with six children to look after by her uneducated mother, but her mother was so hardworking that she owns few properties of her own in the community today.

Karma then realized that her biggest block was herself, she persevered to transform into a better her, “I so want to be successful and financially independent and not get stuck to the box that our society makes of a divorcee/ single mother such as disturbed children, poor, and children remain poor too,” Karma said.

Since working in an international organization gave her an opportunity to explore places around Bhutan, her passion for traveling also developed, Karma started her own travel company, Yachen Tours and Travel, Bhutan, “Yachen” meaning spiritual growth.

I so want to be successful and financially independent and not get stuck to the box that our society makes of a divorcee/ single mother such as disturbed children, poor, and children remain poor too.

Karma believes that there is an out-of-the-world experience of traveling to Bhutan that deserves to be shared. Yachen’s team has been carefully selected to not just randomly put together tour itineraries, but to understand and craft travel experiences taking into account the needs and aspirations of the travelers. They even provide Gender-sensitive traveling packages!

“Bhutan is heavenly with intact culture and nature which is out of this world. I highly recommend Yachen Tours and Travel as they provide the best services with a good set of team, flexible itinerary, best guide, well organized and responsive agent.” praised by Bishal Gurung of Nepal.

Bhutan does offer one of the best travel experiences as rated consistently over many years by experienced travelers and tour rating organizations with eco-friendly and environmentally friendly tours harmoniously blending with our traditions and cultural values. The Lonely Planet hailed Bhutan as the number 1 country to travel to in 2020. From April 4, tourists from all over the world can now visit the beautiful country.
