Online streaming platform Mubi buys rights to Oscar Winner Japanese Drama “Drive My Car”

The production company, The Match Factory has sold all rights of Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar-winning film ‘Drive My Car’ to Mubi, a fast-growing theatrical distributor and streaming platform.

Following its theatrical run, Mubi has also earned the first SVOD rights for the UK and Ireland. The UK distribution rights were obtained from Modern Films.

‘Drive My Car, which was co-written and directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, had its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, where it won Best Screenplay.

It has also made a significant impression this week when it was nominated for Best Picture, Director, International Feature Film, and Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

This critically acclaimed film is based on a short story by Haruki Murakami about a famous theatrical actor and director who falls in love with the quiet young woman assigned to chauffeur him in his beloved red Saab 900.

Mubi is expected to launch the movie in Latin America, India, Malaysia, Africa (excluding French language pay-TV rights), and the Middle East (excluding Israel and Turkey) in the coming months.
