On Sunday, Netflix’s Squid Game made history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, as the show became the first non-English-language series and the first Korean series to win the SAG Awards.
The show swept the awards night with wins in nearly every category it was nominated for
Squid Game stars Lee Jung-Jae and Jung Ho-Yeon marked their first-ever SAG Award nominations and victories.
Lee won the award for best male actor in a drama series over Brian Cox (Succession), Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Kieran Culkin (Succession), and Jeremy Strong (Succession).
While the 27-year-old actress won the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series, beating out Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Sarah Snook (Succession).
In addition, the Korean drama series won the award for best action performance by a stunt ensemble in a television series.
Recently at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, O Yeong-Su, who portrays the elderly Player 001 Oh Il-Nam, became the first South Korean actor to win best supporting actor in a series, miniseries, or television film.
The Korean drama swiftly surpassed Bridgerton’s previous audience record on Netflix, becoming the streaming platform’s most popular series debut.
In January, Netflix confirmed that there will be a second season of Squid Game.
